2008 - Year in Review

So, we never got around to putting together a Christmas card this year. Oops. We feel bad about it, but since it's too late for Christmas now, we've decided to go the postage-free route and publish our year in review online.

We didn't fully realize this when we started keeping a blog, but it's a really good way for anyone to come and see what we've done all year. Luckily for all you readers, we only post two or three times a month, so you wouldn't be overwhelmed in trying to read every post from this whole year. So I guess now I don't feel too bad that we don't post something every other day like some of our friends.

On the right-hand side of this page are links to our posts from every month of the year. You can click through those if you like, but I will also post a couple of links to the major events of the year, along with some pictures that didn't make it onto the blog originally.

From January through March we were busy here finishing our family room in the basement. The room went from this:

To this...

thanks mostly to a lot of help from my father and father-in-law. For me, it wasn't as much of a do-it-yourself project as it was a do-it-themselves project. Just kidding; I did actually do a lot of the work myself, but I never could have done it alone.

In April we had a scare with our baby, Tori, having to spend nearly a week in the hospital. She was diagnosed with an atypical form of something called Kawasaki disease. Luckily the good doctors at Primary Children's Medical Center caught it quickly and were able to keep it from becoming something that would negatively impact her long-term.

We spent a lot of the summer outdoors playing with family,

with friends,

and trying to get our plants to grow.

I also got to go on a short vacation to San Francisco with my Dad and brothers to see the Cubs play the Giants, which was a lot of fun.

The end of summer was fully occupied by our quest to turn the dirt and weeds in our backyard into lush grass. We were mildly successful, in that the dirt and weeds became . . . wait for it . . . grass and weeds. Here are the before and after pictures:

We took our annual vacation a little late this year, in October. We trekked with all of Jenny's family to Orlando for a week with Mickey and Shamu. Jenny and I had a great time, even if our girls were probably a little too young to enjoy it fully.

In October, Tori celebrated her first birthday. And just a week ago, Madeleine turned three years old. Both girls really enjoyed their birthday parties with all of their grandparents, aunts, and uncles. They are both getting so big, and loving each other as sisters often as they are fighting each other. Which is, of course, the natural order of things.

And lastly, we really enjoyed our Christmas last week. Santa brought Tori a bike to match the one that Madeleine got for her birthday. But Tori could not have cared less about the bike, when there were leftover treats laying around that Santa couldn't finish. We feel like the picture below illustrates the true Joy of Christmas.

Happy New Year to everyone, and we hope that 2009 brings you everything you could ever wish for. Check back in at this website once or twice a month for updates throughout the coming year, and don't forget to leave us comments below so we know that someone is actually reading this stuff!

Electrical Storm

Haley did this tag, and the potential for humor and embarrassment was too great to pass up. I should preface this by saying I am nearly 30 and therefore, in my old age, not up-to-date with things like iTunes and digital music, so not all of my music is residing on my computer. Thus, the complete range of my musical preferences may not be reflected here. Anyway, here you go:

Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

I was so excited when it snowed this week! Madeleine kept asking me all day long when we could go out and build a snowman. And I couldn't wait for the moment when I could get Madeleine all bundled up in her new snow clothes and go play. So the moment finally came and it was great!! It wasn't even that cold.

Madeleine remembered the art of snowball throwing and it was perfect packing snow.

Tori stayed on the driveway most of the time. Good thing because she's lacking in good snow wear. Notice the large beanie (it's mine), no boots and gloves that don't even match. Don't worry, she's tough.

Madeleine was quick to make a snow angel.

And look at cute Tori saying hi as she pushes the shovel. I hope she keeps that interest so she can be our designated snow shoveler.

Finally, here is our snowman complete with a carrot nose.

So let it snow! We love it!
(As long as we aren't traveling)

Let the Festivities Begin!!

I love this time of year!! I love the spirit of this time. I love the opportunity to focus more on Christ. And I love the family traditions we participate in. They are some of my favorite. So here's how we've started our holiday season.

First of all, look at these cute kids!! They're smiling because they had just eaten a fabulous Thanksgiving meal.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, we celebrated at Matt's Aunt Kris's house. Good company, delicious food and scrumptious pies. We homemade three pies, and here are two of our beautiful creations (okay the second one is actually a chocolate-peanut butter cake; I couldn't pass it up). YUMMY!!

From the Thanksgiving feast we headed to our house to play games and watch football with Matt's parents and brothers. The favorite game of the evening..."Throw Madeleine on the bean bag" as self-named by Madeleine.

I think most of you will be shocked to hear that I actually woke up bright and early Black Friday and went shopping. Yep, I did it and it was totally worth it. I got two toddler bikes for $65 dollars. Two for one basically. It was totally worth the lack of sleep and the long lines. I got a few other things and now I think I'm converted. So I'll see ya all bright and early next year!

During our Thanksgiving weekend we also enjoyed a second Thanksgiving feast with my extended family on my mom's side. We had family in from Oregon, Georgia, and Alaska. It was fun to chat and even get in a game of basketball. Here's my mom's entire family, except for her brother who passed away a few years ago.

My wonderful husband also spent a day during Thanksgiving weekend risking his life to put Christmas lights on our house. Here's a picture of the less risky portion of the lighting process. Our roof is really up there, so it's always an adventure to hang the lights. Madeleine was so excited to help and would've headed up on the roof if I let her.

My favorite part of the picture is the pose by Madeleine. She was ready for this picture.

Here's our final product. Nothing fancy but I love it.

One of my favorite traditions is heading out to pick our Christmas tree. I love real trees and this year we got the perfect one. I don't think I've seen one better. The girls were very excited to decorate it and they did a great job.

As Madeleine would put the ornaments on, Tori would then take them off. By the time they were done we had ornaments on the tree, on the floor and only on a few branches.

Madeleine even made sure that all the red balls were together and all the silver balls were together.

When the girls went to bed, Matt and I finished the decorating and I love it! Now it just needs some presents.

We've had a great start to the holiday and can't wait for the fun that awaits.
